Initial Research: Koji Kondo

In this project I intend to write a guitar piece for a videogame sound track. My main influences in this project is Koji Kondo, widely known by his work with Nintendo in games such as Donkey Kong, Super Mario and The legend of Zelda. On this research I will focusing on The legend of Zelda: ocarina of time (1998). "An entire generation grew up around the explosive popularity of the game in the late 1990s, which explains why mash-up producers feel compelled to slap Clipse over “Lost Woods,” or why countless symphonic orchestras tour their own reinterpretations, and why a genre named Zeldawave exists at all" (Szatan, 2019).

The songs and the tunes are extremely important to the game once in some part of the game-play player should play the melody in an ocarina instrument to cast the spell. The notes of  each different melodies are selected by pressing buttons in the Nintendo 64 controller. However, it putted some restriction in Kondos writing once there was limited buttons in the controller so that all different melodies just contain 5 different notes. "The five notes in question are D, F, A, B and D. I have to imagine those notes were chosen really carefully to allow as much flexibility as possible in the writing process and truthfully it's pretty genius" (Rodgers, 2021). During an interview to Nintendo Koji Kondo talked about the challenges he had write some of the melodies in these soundtrack and how it helped him to increase as a composer: "In all there are 12 ocarina melodies, I had only five notes to use to for ocarina tunes, be they upbeat major or sad minor songs, making composing difficult" (Kondo, 2010).

One of the greatest songs in this sound track is Zora's Domain theme a calmly, satisfying and dreamy song. The piece is mid tempo  (80bpm), it uses  6/4 time signature. The rhythm of the main melody is based on 8th and 16th variations and there is no tuplets being used in order to create a stable rhythm which is essential to  support the feeling and vibe that is being transmitted by the song. The piece is mainly in G major and in some parts of the theme  it modulates to G Lydian, using a augmented 4th instead of the perfect 4th interval, so that Koji Kondo created an instability and built tension, which is resolved in a G major chord. That chord progression result in a really satisfying, dreamy and peaceful song.

Smart Goals

After brainstorm a couple ideas I had in Milanote, I am creating a Smart objective for this project:

SMART Goal Examples to Help You Get It Right (crewhu.com)

Specific: On this project I intend to perform two or three original songs . I will record those songs using Pro Tools 10, Focusrite 2i2 interface and a Squier stratocaster.
Measurable: I will start recording the rhythm guitars, at least one of the songs will be picking style. After that I will have done 60% of the project, the other 40% stands for recording the solos and mixing the tracks.
Achievable: The goal is achievable. I feel really comfortable playing those songs and my current skills are enough to carry out that project.
Realistic: The goal is realistic. I already have the necessary skills to perform the chosen song for the project.
Timely: I intend to delivery that project as soon as possible. I would say I can record and mix all the tracks in two or three days

In order to create an organized plan and brainstorm ideas I created a project in Milanote:

Final project Ideas generation

For this final project I would like to perform and record a track playing all the instruments. It could be an original song or a cover song. One of my favorites artist is Dave Grohl, songwriter and frontman in the Foo Fighters , and Nirvana ex-drummer. After Nirvana, Dave created his own band Foo Fighters and recorded his first album all by himself, playing all the instruments and singing.

If I choose to go towards an original song direction, I will probably compose a alternative rock piece, once it's an really experimental genre with no limitations, clear convention and  cliches so that I could bring and use all baggage of samba and bossa nova I've built studying music in Brazil. Furthermore,  I could write something in the style of Radiohead, Soundgarden or Pearl Jam or in style of Nick Drake and Linda Perhacs.

Another idea I have is to record a Foo Fighters or Nirvana song, once I have been playing their song for quite a while. One of the songs I might pick is My Hero because it's a song that I fell really comfortable drumming also would be a way to honor one of my favorites drummers, Taylor Hawkins (late Foo Fighters drummer).  I am also thinking about record a Hendrix song, such as little wing or the wind Cries Mary

One of my main inspirations for this project is Jamie Harrison a famous guitar player on Youtube who got popular for his covers of Jimi Hendrix songs

Final Advert

Leopard Stings advert

In this post I would like to reflect on my final advert. The process of creating this advert was challenging. However, I liked the final outcome indeed.  From my perspective I achieved my main goal of creating a soft sell advert focusing on lifestyle instead of the product itself. I liked the colors of the advert and the vibe. The slogan matches the name of the brand and the message that I would like to convey. I am happy with the final result.

The process of creating the advert and the final advert

After the practice, I came with my own advertisement for a guitar string brand which I called Leopard Strings. I created the logo using adobe express, after that I created the poster advertisement using the same program. The poster consist in the logo of the brand, brand name, a slogan and a background image of a man holding a acoustic guitar in the sunset. I chose that image because of the colors which relate with the brand logo colors. When it comes to slogan, it's a idiom and a word play with the word "string" the product that it's being sold by the brand. As I said in the previous post I tried to sell a lifestyle and transmit an aspiration and dream. To create that advertisement I followed the same steps shown in the Pedro Golias: Practice logo and advert creation post.

First I chose a guitar clicking on the element icon in the left bar

I chose Source Serif 4 Subhead as font and wrote the name of the brand, I used a bow layout to the text and a placed it underneath the guitar, so that it followed the shape of the guitar. I also chose an orange outline to the text.

Cliking in the Icon element in the left bar I added a leopard  head between the word "Leopard" and "Strings"

I decided to add a couple flowers on the logo so that it doesn't look so empty. I placed it close to the brand's name.

After that the logo was finised. So I saved it.

Final logo:

Logo brand

Creating the poster advert

First I created a flyer and  chose a image. I set the image as background.

I added the name of the brand and the slogan. I used Bebas Neue as font for the logo and the slogan. For the logo text I used  white color with a black outline and to the slogan I did the opposite, I used black as the main color and white as outline. I placed both the text on the top of the image

I added the logo I created on the bottom and my poster advert was finished.

Advert Ideas

Advertisements in music field can distinguish a lot from the other fields. It's really common to see brands endorsing artists to exposure their product. A example of this is Zildjian which used to endorse the Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins, soo that their cymbals and drum sticks could be massively exposed. furthermore it's not hard to find associating Fender guitars with Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour or Gibson Guitars with Jimmy Page.

Instead of going towards those direction (endorsement and hard sell) I'd like to try a soft sell, selling a lifestyle. I barely found music adverts that sell a lifestyle so I  will create one by my self. One of my main references are surf and skate brand adverts such as Vans and Billabong, because they successfully sell a lifestyle and those brands are commonly related with chill and good vibes. Inspired by the Ernie Ball flea on the top advertisement I created a slogan to the brand: You play on the heartstring. I would like people to relate the string brand with good vibe, peace and love but also with strong and wild playing so that I thinking about using a sunset image as  a background for the poster but use a strong powerful name that can be associated with wildness and animals. For the logo I am thinking about mixing elements that easily relate with the the the feelings and features I said before like good vibe and wildness. So that to achieve that result using flowers and animals might be a great choice as well as something that relate with the product the brand will sell, which is guitar strings.

Practice logo and advert creation

In today's class we created a logo and poster advertisement using Adobe Express. To do so we followed those steps:

Go to the site and click in  make a logo

Clicking in the elements (the icon in left bar) I chose a  orange/yellow guitar because the colors reminded  me about a sunset

I added the name of the brand (leopard strings) using the font Jink

After that I chnged the angle of the guitar and the layout of the text to a bow and placed underneath the guitar. Furthermore, I used an orange outline in the text, so that it matched  the colors of the logo and I    added a slogan, (I did not have one, so I just wrote the word slogan  to se where I would liketo place it).

After that I clicked in the background icon in the top bar and chose a transparent background and saved the work.

With the work saved,  I created a flyer. I chose a image related with the brand to use as background to my work and added my logo.

I set the picture as background I dragged the logo to the right bottom and added the word slogan on the right top once I did not have a slogan yet. I used Aileron font and used a bold text to the slogan.
After that I finished my practice.

Research sequence photo about Duane Michael

Duane Michael is an American photographer mostly known for his capability to tell a narrative  through sequential images. It is fascinating to see how dramatically and enigmatic his work is and it is certainly an inspiration for any photographer looking to convey a message and tell a story. We can see it in pieces such as  " Grandpa Goes to Heaven", "Chance of Meeting" and "Death Comes to the Old Lady".  During his career he took portraits of many influential artists such as Andy Warhol, Marcel Duchamp. Also he worked with the British band The Police, being the photographer behind the iconic cover of "Synchronicity". On this post I will be researching a bit more about Duane Michael work and reflect on it.

Death Comes to the Old Lady, 1969
I liked the angle he shot the picture, setting the old lady on the middle. It is possible to notice that the angles is not stable  they are similar but slightly different. In my opinion it creates a feeling  instability, which is metaphor with the life once it is unpredictable. In the second, third and forth picture we can see the a man in black suit that represent the death. One point that I did like about that sequence is the fact that we can not see clearly the old lady on the last picture, once she was moving during a longer exposure photography so that she looks blur, which represent her passage of this life.

The angle of  those pictures are really interesting once in the first five pictures it looks like filled. However, in the last one it seems so empty and the wall on left looks bigger.  To my mind Duane Michael  shot on this way to convey the message of the importance of the meeting, despite being fast it left a void.  I do like the feeling of spontaneity those images transmit.
In general what I liked the most about Duane Michael is the narrative he can tell through his sequential photos. The fact that mostly all those photos are black and white is really appealing and it casts my attention once it looks enigmatic. The name he gave to those pieces are really simple and successfully describes what is happening on the picture.

Sequence Image class Practice

During the first week Pedro was exposed to the concept of sequence image and created it alongside Thomas, who photographed him jumping from 4 steps-stair in De MontFort University. In total it was 22 shots from that action. After that those images were used to create a contact sheet using an online contact sheet generator.

Welcoming and Introduction

I am an artist from Brazil and a student of media at De Montfort University. My blog aims to expose my experimental digital art and the process and the outcomes of my learning in the field of digital arts.

“Golias” is the Portuguese form of the name Goliath, the giant defeated by David in the holy Bible. It became my nickname after my friend saw a kid called David throw a stone in myhead.

Mostly an experimental artist, I relate himself with the tarot card The Joker, once the main character in the card, is using a blindfold and can not see where he’s going. Artistically speaking, I am the same, I am guided by an intuitive wisdom and not capable and interested in knowing and visualizing the final result until get there.
