Final Project: Rain Theme

On this post I will explain and share of the codes and convention I used to write the Rain Theme. My piece starts on Db Dorian. The chord progression I used is Dbm add 9   Ab/Fb maj7 and Gb7, it is  conventional Dorian progression due to the use of the dominant IV, on this case Gb7. The voice that it's being used on the I and III chords are what really drives this section and set the mood, the half step between Eb and Fb creates a hauntingly vibe as well the first invention on the III chord with Ab on the root. That inversion completely change the color and the mood of the chord, and in spite of being major it does not sound "happy" or "bright". On the second section of the song it modulates to Db Harmonic minor and the chord progression used is Dbm   Ab/Fbmaj7   Bb add 9    Ab7 sus7  and Ab7. That's a typical Harmonic minor progression. The guitar melody on this part emphasize the maj7 of the scale which set the mood of this part. Furthermore, I used a Tanpura pedal note in Db and add some effects such as reverb and phaser.  When it comes to the technical aspects of recording the song I used the software Pro Tools 10, Focusrite 2i2 Interface  and guitar rig to simulate the guitar amps and Wave reverb.

I started recording the guitar tracks and used some virtual pedal effects on guitar Rig such as phaser, tremolo, delay and spring reverb. I basically recorded 4 different guitar lines and then I added Bass, Drums and a Tanpura pedal note. For the Drums I used a already made/ recorded drumbeat in 66 bpm.

After recording  I started to experiment some of the effects more in depth. The song as result became a bit experimental. For the drums I chose to pursue a lofi sound, so that the drums are being hardly compressed and I also added a distortion guitar pedal on it. The drums seems really far and apart from the mix owing to the reverb I used.

The last stage to finish this song was the mixing, I first started working on the pan, and putting everything into their correct place, later on I checked the volume and eventually effects like reverb, equalizer and compression.
